The Foundlings, 2012
The Foundlings is a series of chairs inspired by research of The Foundling Museum's collection of tokens that were left by the parents of the foundlings for identification purposes. I was intrigued with our cultures over-sentimental approach to interpreting these items and the meaning behind them; perhaps our way of dealing with the harsh reality of the circumstances that led people to the Foundling Hospital in the first place. The pieces displayed here a just a few of those made for this project, all identical (originally) in form but each made using a different material or process, they were an experiment to see how they evoke different meanings, emotions or personalities in the eyes of the viewer. Each piece is named after a foundling before their names were changed.
